Top Contractors
Despite forecasts of doom and gloom on the horizon, the market outlook remained bright for many of the area’s top contractors in 2007. Whiting-Turner, Clark Construction Group and Turner Construction all remained in the $1-billion club regionally with Whiting-Turner and Clark approaching the $2-billion dollar mark. Ten companies reported revenues above $500 million last year.
With private sector work softening in the residential and commercial markets, institutional building is proving a safe bet for many companies. Gilbane Building Co., with regional offices in Laurel, Md., and Philadelphia, saw its local revenues nearly double on the strength of its institutional clients. With the company lined up to pursue big projects under the Base Realignment and Closure program, Gilbane is positioned for continued growth in the coming years, making them Mid-Atlantic Construction’s choice for Contractor of the Year.
