RTKL Promotes in New Leaders

After five years of significant growth and profitability, Baltimore-based design firm bulks up its management staff.

Continued strength in the construction market has sent RTKL into expansion mode recently. The Baltimore-based architecture firm promoted six within its regional ranks to vice president, growing the firm’s leadership core. William N. McCarthy, based in Baltimore, has more than 14 years of experience on corporate, government, academic, applied technology and security-intensive facility projects. Washington, D.C.-based Kathryn R. Barnard has designed more than 3 million sq ft of space and tenant fit-out, and has over 26 years of design and management experience. Washington-based Robert B. Berry Jr. has helped guide the geographic expansion of RTKL's commercial studio over the last 10 years. Washington-based Raymond E. Brower is a senior medical planner and project manager with over 20 years of experience in healthcare strategic planning and project management. The director of the planning and urban design studio in the Washington office, William C. Caldwell has over 17 years of experience in the master planning, architecture and urban design. Washington-based Darren L. Vican is among the first full-time members of RTKL's Special Systems Design Group, one of the firm's fastest-growing services. Vican has over 10 years of experience.

Skanska USA Building of Rockville, Md., recently announced two promotions. Gary D. Bilyeu is the new vice president of operations. He has more than 32 years of experience and holds a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Maryland. He joined Skanska in 2005. Thomas Hullen has been named project executive. He is a 26-year veteran with experience in public and private projects. He was previously program director for its worldwide design-build contract with the Air Force Medical Services Group.

PB of Herndon hired Rick Cunningham as senior vice president and national strategic sales manager. Cunningham will be responsible for identifying and pursuing large infrastructure projects and facilitating key market initiatives in the U.S. He has more than 26 years of experience in engineering/architectural marketing and operational management. Prior to joining PB, he served as a senior vice president and national marketing manager at HDR.

Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern of Roanoke hired James B. Richards, Jr. as a senior vice president. In his role as market director for infrastructure and natural systems, Richards will be responsible for integrating services between HSMM’s Civil and Environmental, Transportation, and Watershed Concepts divisions. He has more than 30 years of experience in the water and wastewater, water resource, and transportation industries.

Brailsford & Dunlavey of Washington hired two program managers. Will Mangrum’s background in the design and construction industry includes working on ballparks, stadiums, arenas, and housing.John Finnigan brings extensive experience in construction program management, real estate, land development, planning, and finance related to housing and education projects.

Omar Calderon has rejoined Perkins Eastman. Calderon, who will work in the Arlington, Va., office, has more than 13 years of experience. He previously worked in the firm’s New York office. Prior to returning to the firm, he was a designer at DMJM and a project designer for Rubeling and Associates.

S&ME recently announced new additions to its Richmond, Va., office. Brock Bryan joined as staff scientist. Lisa Ennis transferred from the Raleigh office. Anna Best is a 2007 graduate of Earlham College.

Baltimore-based Gaudreau recently announced that Chidi Ugbam, Tyler Grimshaw, Dean Chourafa and Steve Leonhardt have joined the firm.Also, Stacy Brian and Pierre Gendreau have been certified as LEED professionals by the USGBC.

Mid-Atlantic Utility Locating of Chantilly named Aaron B. Blow as director. Blow has been with Mid-Atlantic since its inception and is experienced in all aspects of subsurface utility engineering.

Mahan Rykiel Associates of Baltimore hired four landscape designers. They include Joe Augstein from Syracuse University, Robbie Roach from University of Florida, Mike Rogers from University of Wisconsin and Nathan Scott from Pennsylvania State University.

The Lighting Practice recently added Emily Clay to its Philadelphia office. Clay is a recent graduate of The Pennsylvania State University.
